News that the race in Congressional District 2 is almost within the margin of error has to buoy Democrats already excited about the sky’s-the-limit prospects in Nevada this cycle. Many Democrats talked a good game about Jill Derby’s rematch against Rep. Dean Heller, but most believed this is a solidly GOP district. Indeed, no Democrat has won since CD2 was created in 1982. But Derby came close in 2006, thanks in part to a bloody GOP primary and her solid campaign. She also almost defeated Heller because she won in Republican Washoe County. But Washoe is less Republican than ever, and if Derby can win Washoe by enough to offset killer margins Heller will win in the rurals, who knows what might happen.
