LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ensign as close to Bush as he ever was

Regarding the story in Wednesday’s Las Vegas Sun, “Sorry we missed ya”:

Lovers of individual freedoms have to applaud Sen. John Ensign’s decision not to attend President Bush’s fundraising speech in Las Vegas on Thursday. Our hardworking senator couldn’t interrupt his busy schedule to be seen with the commander in chief.

This is the same Sen. Ensign who missed a key vote on the war in Iraq because he flew back to Nevada to play some golf. And what’s so important in D.C. that the senator can’t leave? He’s busy “pushing for the White House-favored update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (something for which the telecommunications giants will be eternally grateful).

While most Republican members of the Nevada delegation avoid President Bush like the plague (and who could blame them?), Sen. Ensign is busy working to extend a bill that has contributed greatly to the president’s plummeting approval ratings. Stay strong, Senator. Stay strong. You are a real “profile in courage.”
