LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Congressional elections are important too

The focus at the present time is which candidate will represent the Democratic and Republican parties for the presidency of the United States. Not to be forgotten, however, or underexposed is this question: Who will control Congress?

The situation as it exists today, as a result of the 2006 elections, is that Democrats now have a majority in Congress. However, most of the Republicans in Congress have remained in lock step with President Bush and they have prevented the passage of a number of bills that would have benefited millions of Americans.

The Republicans have literally tied the hands of the Democrats because it takes a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress to override a president’s veto.

So much for the claim from Republican sympathizers that our current Congress has been ineffective. The upcoming election is critical in electing as many Democrats to the House and Senate as possible to make certain this situation will not happen again.
