Since the Oscars are tonight, it’s a good time to put out the nominees for Best Performance by a Nevada Politician in 2007. This is a tough category this year, although it has been dominated by Mayor Oscar Goodman for so long. But we have: Rep. Dean Heller, for a Kafkaesque transformation from moderate to conservative; Rep. Jon Porter, for his breakout role as a George W. Bush critic; County Commission Chairman Rory Reid, for his perpetually subdued performance despite chaos all around him; Speaker Barbara Buckley, for being nice to 26 assemblymen — at least most of the time; and about three-quarters of the Legislature, for posing as statesmen for four months and getting people to believe it.
