LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

A wonderful man who deserved better

Regarding Mike Trask’s Wednesday story, “Loving man helped us realize what matters (Daniel Davis: 1984-2008)”:

In today’s world, we can send a man to the moon, perform organ transplants or turn a slot machine into a $625,000 watch. Yet we cannot make a simple seat belt to fit a mentally disabled young man suffering from fragile X syndrome.

Now I’d grant you, he was not your average-sized man, nor is much of the world. Obesity is on the rise. Yet the airlines are able to accommodate this need, so why was Henderson’s Building Lifetime Adult Social Ties program unable to?

The program has two versions of seat belt extensions that did not work, and it said money was a factor. So if the city’s safety policy says that all therapeutic patients are to wear seat belts, why didn’t the city first make sure there would be no issues with this?

Well, it no longer matters to this wonderful man who stood at the corner waiting and wondering why that bus no longer picked him up. For Daniel Davis has died. We all let this man down.

I myself am ashamed to say I knew nothing of this until his death. It may be too late for him, but it is not for others. This world was not ready for Daniel — let’s just hope we can do better for others.
