U.S. survived for years without ‘God’ in pledge

A.J. Maimbourg, in her Sunday letter, is “appalled” at the suggestion that “under God” be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. Would it really lead us to ruin? What sort of God would run away or cease to exist if citizens didn’t mention him/her/it during a pledge to their country? How did the USA survive prior to 1954, when the words “under God” were added?
