LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Politicians should make way for real geniuses

Long, long ago, before the Age of Enlightenment, people believed the world was flat and man could not fly. Today the Flat Earth Society has been reborn in Washington, D.C.

Cabals composed mostly of politicians, the majority of whom are lawyers, now sit in Washington sorting out our energy policy. What policy?

These deep thinkers hardly take time out of their busy campaign fundraising schedules to ponder the fate of potential energy sources. Mirror, mirror on the wall, should it be solar or wind, drill or no drill, shale oil or coal, nuclear or ethanol, hydroelectric or wave energy — what is the best choice of them all? How about energy conservation? Is that also a good thing?

Why tax the craniums of these learned folks more? How about a policy of all energy all the time? The worst thing that could happen to our national defense is to have no usable domestic energy sources.

Want to decimate our economy? Just run short of energy or make it so expensive we will all be operating human squirrel cages at work and at home.

Why not open up our government coffers once again and spend some money on pure research and development? Sponsor hundreds of multiyear energy development and conservation grants, contests and awards at the university level and at the corporate level.

Let scientists, engineers and capital markets, not politicians, sort this out.
