Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile

The Southern Nevada Health District today said a cluster of mosquitoes in the Las Vegas Valley has tested positive for the West Nile virus.

The mosquitoes were found in the 89122 ZIP code, which is in the eastern Valley at Boulder Highway.

Nevada had 12 human cases of West Nile last year, including three cases involving residents of Clark County. West Nile virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. The illness is not spread person to person.

Health officials urged residents to report mosquito activity or stagnant water by visiting SouthernNevadaHealthDistrict.org or calling the mosquito control hot line at 759-1220.
