LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ivanpah airport would threaten desert

The Las Vegas Sun’s recent report, “Ivanpah planning forges ahead,” clearly revealed the bad economics of building an international airport near Primm.

The piece raised questions about the economic viability of the proposed Ivanpah Valley Airport and presented the opinions of three diverse experts — including a financial analyst from Morgan Stanley and a vice president of the Air Travel Association — all of whom predict that soaring oil prices will dramatically curtail airline growth.

Many Nevadans are increasingly concerned about the wisdom of spending millions of their tax dollars on an unnecessary airport immediately adjacent to the Mojave National Preserve, a jewel in the desert that Americans have chosen to protect for their children and grandchildren.

High-frequency jet noise and intense lighting through the night will negatively affect wildlife in the park, not to mention the families that seek peace and recreation in our desert.

With multiple airlines curtailing service, it doesn’t make good business sense to continue pushing for an airport that also threatens one of America’s national treasures.

The writer is a frequent visitor to the Ivanpah area and is the manager of the National Parks Conservation Association’s California Desert Program.
