Letter to the Editor:

Gold Butte deserves special designation

I read with interest your June 19 editorial headlined “Our natural heritage,” about how Congress is planning to preserve more public lands by designating them as wilderness areas.

Congress should provide this designation to the Gold Butte region in the Virgin Mountains northeast of Las Vegas. This should be a front-burner issue for Clark County residents and politicians. Gold Butte was recently named one of the country’s most threatened wild places by the conservation group Campaign for America’s Wilderness.

There are so many one-of-a-kind sites and animal species in this region. We would be committing a real injustice if we let any of them slip away.

Taking care of this amazing wild place should be a central component of our region’s plan for the future. Without it, we risk losing our natural heritage and becoming just another stretch of highway with too many lights and nothing much to see.
