LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Fallen heroes deserve special recognition

In the history of the Clark County School District, there have been efforts by various individuals and groups to have a high school named in honor of local veterans or those who are serving in the military. Many local youngsters and veteran seniors have served with honor and distinction, and some made the ultimate sacrifice in dutiful service.

Their devotion to duty, dedication to their country, state and communities, and sacrifices made in love for all of us are worthy of our recognition. In the past, efforts to name a local high school for the veterans have been met with little enthusiasm and support from the School Board.

Isn’t it about time that we devote ourselves to finally naming the next high school “Veterans Memorial High School”? Some school officials have proposed that name for a possible high school at Nellis Air Force Base. That prospect may be many years in the future.

Why should these heroes wait any longer? Why not propose that name now for the very next high school built in this district? Incalculable positive public relations would flow from such a measure.

It would be most appropriate to honor all of our veterans, living and dead, by publicly announcing this honor on Memorial Day, May 26. Let’s pay this memorable and honorable public tribute now to those from whom each of us has received untold blessings.

The writer is a retired Clark County School District teacher.
