Letter to the Editor:

Democracies can’t be citizens’ crutches

There is an adage that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This has never been more true than today. Through the centuries the thing that has caused democratic governments to fail is a growing realization by the populace that it can tap into the national treasury by merely electing those who promise greater government benefits, which can shield them from their own mistakes. Unfortunately, this is a siren call difficult to ignore.

On the other hand, a successful, lasting democracy is one that encourages its citizens to assume control over their futures; where success derives from individual achievements; and where individuals do not depend on government to “bail them out” of everyday hardships. It seems that this is the choice before us this year.

Should we seek greater largess from the government, with the undeniable risk that such programs cannot succeed without greater government growth and spending (read: increased taxation)? Or should we choose the alternative that seeks to reduce the size of government and its spending? I know what my clear choice is.
