Letter to the Editor:

Why can’t U.S. government get health care right?

PBS’ “Frontline” program examined government-run health care systems in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Switzerland and Taiwan (all capitalist democracies).

Although each system differed from the others, they had some important things in common. Under each system, the patients were happy, the doctors were happy, and the hospital administrators and other medical care givers were happy. Usually there are no long waits for care or denials of care. No one was drowning in red ink — not the patients, not the governments.

These systems passed the crucial tests. Why can’t our representatives in Congress learn from them?

A hundred years ago, if you wanted to build a flying machine, you studied the Wright brothers’ system because it worked. I think our current Congress would have continued strapping sheets of cardboard or plywood to their arms and jumping off the garage roof.
