Social Security should become a campaign priority

David McGrath Schwartz’s Tuesday story on Social Security — “Social Security: Big issue, few ideas” — hit on what should be the biggest campaign issue for every Washington politician running for office. The national debt will soon permanently cripple our economy, caused in large part by ballooning Social Security liabilities. Fixing it cannot be put off any longer.

What we don’t need is a negative campaign by one candidate attacking another for bringing up the issue. Democratic Sen. Harry Reid needs to engage Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle in a serious dialogue on how to reform Social Security. Voters need to accept sacrifices and embrace a thorough discussion of how to save the program.
