LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

System set up to favor incumbents is simply unfair

Regarding Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston’s Thursday Flash Point, “Incumbents’ unfair advantage.”

Ralston said no elected official facing re-election should do public service announcements (PSAs) or appear on government-run stations in the calendar year they’re up for re-election. Presently they do so.

It’s elementary that this gives incumbents an unfair advantage over their challengers who don’t have such access.

Likewise, as Ralston noted, the franking privileges (free mailings) that federal representatives enjoy should be suspended in the year they’re up for election.

Such restrictions on incumbents in the year they’re running for re-election is neither over-the-top nor invalid. Herein, our American principle is to the point. Meaning, there must be a level playing field applicable to all candidates running for election.

As Nevada comes out of this recession, let us also come out of the ethical incongruities of this practice that overly favors incumbents. Let Nevada be the role model for our country in fair play for all candidates.
