LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Corporate greed costing us dearly

On April 21, a letter to the editor of mine was published concerning corporate greed devaluing human life. My opinion was based on several avoidable accidents that happened because it was cheaper to not provide safety and/or repairs for workers. The Massey mine explosion killed 29 workers last month, and since then there have been other accidents. Another miner was killed in a collapse and 11 workers were killed when an offshore drilling rig exploded. As it stands, these people died because of the lack of safety features or proper procedures not taken.

BP said it could handle any accident if it occurred. Obviously not. The raw oil leaking from a pipeline will destroy the economy and environment in the Gulf of Mexico for many years to come. Once again the government caved on a decision about safety, trusting a corporation, only to find it was a lie.

I ask: What can be more appropriate than saving other humans’ lives?

Greed, profit margins and debt will eventually be the downfall of working-class people.
