LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Brian Sandoval’s lack of vision is disappointing

I am terribly disappointed that Brian Sandoval, a Republican candidate for governor, supports the Arizona immigration law. In a state like Nevada, which has literally been built on the backs of immigrants (many undocumented), such a law would further isolate and divide our communities.

The U.S. immigration system — as it exists and operates — no longer works. We need bold leaders who can see this and propose real solutions to move our state and country forward, not backward.

Economists agree that to address the tsunami of Baby Boomer retirements, we need many more young workers to sustain the Social Security system. Additionally, who will provide the services needed for our aging population?

Former President Bill Clinton and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich have both recommended that we need more immigration, not less, to address this tsunami! Let’s focus on how to integrate and prepare our undocumented populations into our society so we can move forward, not backward.

Sandoval, thanks but no thanks.

His lack of vision on this issue and inability to see that the Arizona law is destined to be eventually overturned is disappointing. His judgment is clearly not based on a vision of what Nevada can be, rather it appears to be based on a desire to pander to Republican voters.
