LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Nevada can’t do without Reid’s experience, clout

My grandmother used to tell me that I was cutting off my nose to spite my face when I was unable or unwilling to focus on the bigger picture. Nevadans who don’t, or choose not to, comprehend how much Sen. Harry Reid has done for our state are doing just that.

With Nevada’s economy in dire straits, sending a freshman senator to Washington is beyond foolhardy. It’s insanity. Reid, the Senate majority leader, is the only politician with enough clout to make sure that the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility does not become operational.

If the facility is allowed to open, the Las Vegas Strip will go dark forever. Tourists will never believe they are safe when nuclear shipments are allowed to pass through Southern Nevada on their way to Yucca Mountain, just 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Get a grip and start thinking about the enormous downside of voting out one of the hardest-working U.S. senators in recent history. Nevada can’t afford to lose him. He’s one of very few honest people in Washington.

This is the time to look at the big picture, at the future. Without Sen. Reid, we will be truly screwed.
