LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

GOP sure isn’t helping Obama in tough times

President Barack Obama is working double time to put people back to work, put our financial institutions in order in a meaningful way, and close offshore tax havens.

The GOP, in contrast, talks of weakened financial reform legislation and putting former President Ronald Reagan on the $50 bill, replacing Ulysses S. Grant, another mediocre president.

Reagan is the president who had soaring budget deficits with massive borrowing because the plan he used was the Laffer curve, which failed to capture enough revenue to pay for the tax cuts he enacted. Reagan also relaxed financial regulation and was creator of a “slacker” economy of minimum-wage jobs with no future.

If anything, we should put former President Bill Clinton, who balanced the budget and enacted welfare reform, on the $50 bill, or Franklin D. Roosevelt, who created a Securities and Exchange Commission with real teeth.

If Sarah Palin gets in, I say we should put Alfred E. Neuman of Mad magazine on the $20 bill, denoting truly funny money in light of her fiscal policies.
