flash point:

Need scorecard for candidates’ stances

Sometimes during campaigns, you wonder whether candidates are trying too hard to go against their true natures. A Hispanic candidate for governor (Brian Sandoval), once regarded as a moderate, has turned to the right, including support for a new illegal immigration law that many Hispanics fear will lead to de facto racial profiling. An anti-abortion rights darling (Sue Lowden) is being pumped up by a national anti-abortion group even though she voted in 1990 for the most abortion-rights-friendly initiative ever proposed in this state. And a pro-gun hero (Danny Tarkanian), who took heat in the past from his failing grade from the National Rifle Association, has been racking up endorsements from NRA types. Should we listen to what they say or what they’ve done?
