LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Foiled bombings more their failure than our success

Within E.J. Dionne’s commentary in Thursday’s Las Vegas Sun, he indicates that a disaster within Times Square was averted by the “... cooperation between an observant merchant and a responsible police officer.” Attorney General Eric Holder stated the bombing was “thwarted.”

These are not true statements. Both the “underwear bomber” and the Times Square bomber were successful in placing their weapons at their respective desired locations for explosion.

They were successful in igniting the devices. But the weapons themselves were failures, allowing for the intervention of those in the vicinity.

We need to remember that nothing prevented the placement of the weapons. It was the ineptitude of the bombers that prevented disasters. The reaction of bystanders and law enforcement after the discovery was absolutely magnificent. But will we be as lucky to have incompetent bombers the next time?
