flash point:

A sad loss for schools and students

Maybe you never heard of Mary Jo Parise-Malloy. Your loss. Maybe you never met Mary Jo Parise-Malloy. An even bigger loss. She died way too young Wednesday at 48. I knew her through her advocacy for schools as a founder of Nevadans for Quality Education. She was full of boundless optimism and enthusiasm about the cause, even though some (guilty!) tried to inject realism or even cynicism into her life. Negativity was a foreign concept to her, which is saying something after dealing with the Nevada Legislature and its myopia session after session after session. Parise-Malloy could fight Carson City but not colon cancer. She tried, as valiantly as she fought for everything. But she finally succumbed. The kids of Nevada will not know who they have lost. But I — and many others — do.
