LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

A way to boost government efficiency

This week Greece announced that as part of its cost-cutting plans, it is going to cut the number of municipalities from 1,000 to 400. That is a significant savings in red tape and unnecessary government. If anything, it will make that country more efficient.

If we as Americans really are serious about financial reform, then we will look at the same approach while we have the option to do so.

I believe we have come to the point where we can no longer afford to have states with 400,000 to 600,000 in population having the same number of senators and the same type of government structure as those states with a population base of 20 million, for example.

Think about the amount of money as a country we could use to pay down the debt with more government efficiency in both state government and local municipalities than currently exists. When people start to talk about less government, this thought comes to mind: Let’s do what smart businesses do — merge and gain efficiency and savings in real dollars.
