LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Why ‘Obamacare’ is not a dirty word

More than one letter writer Friday opined about the recently passed health care legislation. When a writer described the legislation as “Obamacare,” I knew it was meant derisively.

Some of my friends have added the term to their vocabulary. When asked to describe their opposition to this legislation, they are taken aback.

After several uncomfortable moments, they claim “illegals are covered.” Of course, this is not true.

They then go to the oft-repeated “a vast new government bureaucracy will be created.” I don’t think so.

Finally, they claim “It will add trillions to the deficit.” Wrong again. The latest estimate is that health care will be budget neutral during the first 10 years.

I then explain some components of this legislation as described by the AARP and other publications:

1. Those satisfied with their current coverage can keep it.

2. Those with pre-existing conditions who have been denied coverage will be able to purchase appropriate insurance.

3. No arbitrary monetary ceilings can be set by insurers, making those with catastrophic illnesses fully covered.

4. Incentives will be given to small business to encourage owners to cover their employees.

5. Health screenings will be part of every patient’s policy.

6. Eventually 32 million uninsured will have basic coverage.

Isn’t the truth a powerful disinfectant?
