LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Trim government by getting rid of members of House

Recent elections and polls point to the fact that many are interested in changing the way our government works.

I have some ideas for change. I would like to offer one idea today and the reasons for it.

There is too much deadlock and waste in Congress. A legislative body is certainly needed in a democratic society, however I propose eliminating the House of Representatives and just keeping the Senate as our congressional body.

Each state is an independent entity and should have equal power and representation. The two senators from each state allow for equal-state status.

A large state does not justify more power to it. Each state is equally important. The House was originally created as an appeasement to the large states. I believe that the deadlock and waste no longer justify that original compromise.

With one body instead of two, the deadlock and bickering can be avoided. More can be accomplished without the nasty politicking that normally goes on.

Much money, waste and redundancy exist as a result of having two legislative bodies. Government would run more smoothly with only the Senate. I know there are 435 people who would instantly disagree with me, but we can all be represented fairly by one Senate.

Our U.S. Constitution is a great document, but it does not mean that major changes cannot be made from time to time, as needed. It is time to call a constitutional convention, like our founders, and make necessary changes to help bring our famous document in line with modern times and thinking so our great nation can continue to flourish.
