LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Follow Phoenix’s plan to become a big-league city

I recently read about the large-scale stadium proposals trying to partially fund their projects with taxpayer money and wanted to point out an easier path to becoming a big-league town like our neighbors to the southeast, Phoenix.

Many years ago the forward-thinking folks in Maricopa County came up with a plan to lure baseball teams to their backyards for spring training. This was long before Phoenix actually became the large city it is today. Now we see that as a city of roughly 3 million, they have not only a Major League Baseball team, but also a winning NBA franchise, an NFL Super Bowl contender and an NHL playoff contender.

We, as a community, can do the same thing. First, build a state-of-the art spring training facility to lure a least two teams away from Phoenix and compete with the other teams in the Cactus League in the spring. Then Little Leaguers and adult softball leagues can use these for tournaments the rest of the year. It’s a win-win for Clark County. We can think about bigger things a few years down the road, once we support and make our facilities turn a healthy profit.
