LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Calderon’s Arizona comments were not called for

I was delighted to hear that two U.S. senators, John McCain and John Cornyn, had the courage to question Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s interference and questioning of Arizona’s immigration law. Foreign representatives, especially the heads of state, should maintain certain decorum and tact and refrain from commenting on the domestic policies of a country they are visiting.

What was galling was that President Barack Obama stood next to President Calderon at the news conference and not only allowed him to make negative comments about the Arizona law, but while agreeing with him, himself made negative comments about the law. So much for having the courage and standing up for one’s country and the enforcement of its policies.

President Calderon, instead of being critical of our domestic policy, should have concentrated on discussing how he and his country can help stem the flow of illegal immigrants from his country. Would that be too much to ask?

On a side note, how does one prove one’s U.S. citizenship without carrying a passport, birth certificate or naturalization papers on person all the time? Legal immigrants are required to carry their “green card” with them at all times, which helps to prove their legality.
