LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Wins for NV Energy are losses for ratepayers

NV Energy plans to install new meters to encourage energy conservation. The remote reading meters will reduce NV Energy personnel costs. A win for NV Energy!

The energy conserved by reduced customer usage will no doubt be sold on the spot market; after all, it will be excess energy at that point to NV Energy; they will sell the energy at a premium. A win for NV Energy!

All conserved energy will be accounted in a loss column to NV Energy. The Nevada Legislature, however, has guaranteed that NV Energy cannot lose money due to customer conservation. Rates will increase to make up for the “loss.” A win for NV Energy!

Seniors and others who continue to use energy during the peak afternoon hours, when the temperature is 100-plus degrees, will also pay a higher rate. A win for NV Energy!

The meters are a win-win-win-win for NV Energy and will certainly provide bonus payments to NV Energy executives.

Please explain to me once again, how are the new meters going to improve my life? I am a senior who must endure those 100-plus degree afternoons at home, not in an air-conditioned NV Energy office. Not a single win for me.
