LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

State shouldn’t handle pensions of public employees

Almost every state that has a Public Employees’ Retirement System has enormous unfunded debt because of it.

In light of recent articles about what needs to be done with PERS, I have a suggestion.

It seems that most, if not all, local government employees covered by PERS belong to one union or another. So with that being the case, why do we need PERS?

Let the PERS fund give each union back the money that members have paid in, and let the unions handle their own pension and health care methods. Leave the state out of it.

In the private sector, that’s the way it is done. The unions define their benefits as they see fit.

Maybe then we won’t have people retiring at 55 with a $100,000 pension at taxpayers’ expense.
