LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

$1 trillion-plus buys protection for this nation

I have a simple response to Richard Secrist’s Friday letter to the editor — headlined “Spend money on improving life at home, not on wars” — that asked what you would buy with the money saved on Iraq and Afghanistan.

All of his spending ideas would be in vain if not for the money spent protecting this country from another 9/11 attack and those plotting it. We have thankfully stopped several other events, partially through the ineptness of the attackers on Christmas on an airliner in Detroit and in an SUV in New York.

As well, we have prevented several others who didn’t get to the point of an actual attempt, due to information gained in our interrogation of captured enemy combatants. The first duty of our president is to protect our borders, and that is what the $1 trillion-plus is doing.

If anything, we should be spending more.
