FLASH POINT:

Whose ‘polling’ says what?

How do you know when a campaign is grasping at straws? When it releases unscientific polls showing their candidates doing well — results that contradict more scientific results. Two examples from last week: Danny Tarkanian, who has been left behind (or so it seems) by the Sharron Angle-Sue Lowden battle, releasing results through his campaign of a 75-voter early voting poll. Seventy-five voters! Guess what? Tark was in a dead heat for the lead (with Angle). Shocker. Also last week, the moribund campaign of Gov. Jim Gibbons released a “grass-roots poll” that showed — are you ready? — the governor leading the race. And handily, too — 39 percent to 26 percent for Mike Montandon and only 15 percent for Brian Sandoval. Really? Perhaps Team Gibbons was reading the results upside-down?
