Linda Powers’ March 28 letter to the editor, headlined “United States on a first-of-its-kind downward spiral,” said it far better than anyone else. She uses clear, concise thinking in her brilliant list of what causes a country to spiral down to Third World status.
Following her letter by one day was J. Patrick Coolican’s excellent column, “Philosophy shaping civilization,” which brought more sunlight to proposed educational cutbacks — this one being the plan to eliminate UNLV’s philosophy department.
I am astounded that our officials are so ignorant that one of the first things they would propose to cut is the exact thing that Nevada, indeed the entire nation, needs most to fend off this spiral.
Thanks to the Las Vegas Sun’s voice of sanity in what is increasingly an insane world.
