LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Silence beats the blather of pundits any day

Watching and listening Wednesday to the president give a clear, interesting and informative speech on our country’s budget problems and a direction for solutions was a rewarding experience.

Sadly the experience and its good feelings were nearly eviscerated when a loudmouthed and opinionated wannabe pundit appeared on-screen and attempted to tell me what just moments ago I had seen and heard with my own eyes and ears. Come on. That behavior is reflected and repeated by a bucket load of news people, show hosts and politicians these days — and it’s annoying.

So, for moments like these, I keep the TV remote within easy reach. I can grab the control, silence the intruding Media Munchkin with one touch, and then lean back in my chair and relish the silence with great satisfaction.

Wednesday was especially gratifying. Even though the would-be pundit wasn’t Glenn Beck, who immediately appeared after the president spoke and claimed to know better than I what Barack Obama had just said, I recalled with great pleasure that it was Beck who was recently fired. That made it doubly soothing.
