LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Children should be at the forefront of nation’s plans

As I was reading the article by New York Times columnist David Brooks in Wednesday’s Las Vegas Sun, “The new normal: Education cuts are slicing into our children’s future,” I was reminded of the thoughts I had 36 years ago when I came to the United States.

Being a former French citizen, I was extremely impressed at the time of the speed limit in the school zones — 15 mph in a school zone! The French had a sign representing two children holding each others’ hands, looking pretty scared to attempt to cross the street and escape the local speed demons.

I remember telling my French friends that America was very protective of her children. What happened? Why do we want to reduce the investment in their future so we can avoid new taxes and stay comfortable with our way of life?

The children are the future; our future has passed a long time ago. Perhaps if we don’t care, we should raise the speed limit in school zones.
