Letter to the editor:

Left has history of ripping judges

In Erwin Chemerinsky’s recent column titled “GOP candidates: Bashing the Supreme Court,” Chemerinsky writes, “Bashing ‘liberal’ judges has been a staple for Republican presidential candidates at least since Richard Nixon ...” How about sitting presidents such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, who so disliked the Supreme Court’s attempts to stop his socialist policies that he talked of packing the court with justices who would go along with him?

Regarding other claims in the column:

The Supreme Court didn’t hand Bush anything — it stopped Florida from handing the White House to Al Gore by counting “hanging chads” differently from county to county!

If the Founders wanted the militia to be the only ones who could keep and bear arms, as liberals on the court contended, why does the Second Amendment say, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” and not the “right of the militia to keep and bear arms,” as Justice Antonin Scalia asked?

The 9th Circuit is a rogue court. The Supreme Court has reversed or vacated 19 of the 26 rulings it looked at coming from the 9th Circuit this term. Chemerinsky opines, “Reversal rates have no meaning whatsoever. ... If the Supreme Court overrules the 9th Circuit, it doesn’t mean the 9th Circuit was wrong. ... It means the Supreme Court had the last word.” Thank you, Marbury v. Madison!
