Letter to the editor:

Voting GOP is a vote for more war

In response to Bob Jack’s letter, “Iraq invasion was worth supporting”:

The Iraq War was based on lies and fear, pure and simple. This war was promoted by the draft-dodging Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz. And, of course, the hero of the Air National Guard, George W. Bush. Remember Dick Cheney stating we would be greeted as liberators? And the Iraq War’s costs would be around $87 billion? And don’t forget Bush with his “mission accomplished” marketing stunt.

We were not greeted as liberators and the war has cost more than $1 trillion and was not accomplished for years. This war of profit took our focus off Afghanistan, where the terrorist group al-Qaida was located and sheltered by the Taliban, thus throwing away our hard-earned gains and allowing the Taliban to reconstitute its forces.

Furthermore, the biggest threat to the world’s security — the gangster terrorist government of Iran — is now emboldened and strengthened by the removal of Saddam Hussein. And, last but not least, we should not forget Cheney’s former company Haliburton and the other special-interest Republican Party supporters that made a fortune ripping off American taxpayers with billions of dollars worth of no-bid contracts.

The Iraq War wrecked our economy, wrecked our federal deficit and wrecked our country’s prestige in the world. Voting in another Republican administration would be the start of the Iranian war for profit on the backs of our citizens and servicemen.
