A Monday letter to the editor, “Gun-free zones cut down on massacres,” cites James Holmes and the Colorado movie theater incident as proof of his point. However, the Colorado movie theater was itself a gun-free zone! The theater had rules against guns on the premises.
Gun-free zones induce and attract massacres of helpless victims who can’t fight back. (When was the last time one of these cowards attacked a police station?) Not all teachers or civilians need to be armed to be a deterrent. Would that be a guarantee that a massacre wouldn’t happen? Of course not. But a reasonable guarantee is that you’re safer with a trained “good guy” around than you are without any in a gun-free zone.
