letter to the editor:

Both sides should tone down rhetoric

It’s time for some civility and intelligence in this country when we debate issues or advocate political causes. Martin Bashir resigned (was fired) for his disgraceful comments about Sarah Palin. In point of fact, disgraceful, derogatory comments are hurled from both extremes of the political spectrum.

For extremists of both ilks, when they don’t have facts or reason to support their positions, they are left with only demonizing, demeaning and insulting their opponents in the hopes of elevating their point of view. What they are trying to do is inflame the populace and turn the debate into an emotional battle where they are on even footing.

What we need in this country is a resurgence of debate and respect for the opposition because both sides of the political spectrum have good ideas to offer that need to be fairly thought out and calmly discussed. Of course, that doesn’t make for as exciting radio and TV, but it would make for a better country.
