letter to the editor:

Where are all these malnourished kids?

I’ve read that the Clark County School District has a summer feeding program for children that may not be getting nutritious meals at home.

I also see that 55 percent of the children in the district qualify for these free meals.

Now, I’m really happy that we’re feeding the children, but 55 percent of the total being nutritionally deprived seems a little high. I wonder what the criteria are and who is determining these numbers.

Are there nutritional assessors who go into these children’s homes to monitor daily meal preparation? I doubt it’s a visual assessment because when I have occasion to drive by any of our schools, I have difficulty spotting a nutritionally challenged child.

I see multitudes of children who look like they’ve had way too much nutrition, but I’ll be darned if I can pick out any of the group that make up the 55 percent. Maybe they’re hiding behind their classmates.

And where are the parents in all of this? I had no idea nutritional deprivation and abuse was so rampant in our community, and I certainly hope our law enforcement agencies are doing something about it.
