letter to the editor:

America has not seen last of racism

White people typically use the expression “race card” when they think black people are speaking up about the injustice of our cultural relationship. Both groups think the other is racist.

It’s preposterous to suggest that blacks have discriminated against whites. On the other hand, history and the current mindset and legislation strongly suggest that whites discriminate against blacks — 250 years of slavery, 100 years of Jim Crow and now voter discrimination. The only difference between old Jim Crow and new Jim Crow is passage and enforcement of a few new laws that prevented racism and discrimination from becoming even more contemptible and vile.

Any conversation about racism must start with blacks discussing their personal experiences. Whites have to listen open-mindedly. White people will have a difficult time discussing their experiences with racism because it does not exist. There is no way they can identify with racism. Are white people ready for discussion? Do white people care that racism still exists today but demonstrations and expressions of racism are not as overt as they once were?

The best example is the lack of respect for our first black president, a president that I support 100 percent.
