There were several opinion pieces in the Sunday newspapers lamenting the fact that the Nevada Legislature did not provide enough tax increases to improve Nevada schools.

I know several school teachers in Clark County who lament the fact that they must teach to the lowest common denominator, while many kids who want to learn are not challenged and motivated. If students cannot speak English, they simply cannot learn the material.

Teachers say they are prevented from disciplining rowdy, disruptive students. If disruptive student behavior cannot be modified, it becomes an impossible learning environment for everyone.

Excellent teachers are replaced by poor performers with more seniority. If teachers are forced to dumb down to the most disruptive and/or language-challenged students, it makes no difference how much money you put into a failing system.

Let’s fix what’s broken. Teachers should be at the top of the public pay scale, but only if they are able to produce the best and brightest to lead our country into the future.
