Letter to the editor:

Not OK to ignore our country’s laws

Anna Ledesma tells a heart-wrenching story, “Immigration reform needed to keep dreams alive,” of working hard and contributing to the community in pursuit of her dream — American citizenship. And for that reason, we should ignore that nasty old piece of paper that may define her status, and that of millions of others, as an immigrant who has remained in the country illegally.

Unfortunately for Ms. Ledesma, pieces of paper matter. Laws are written on pieces of paper; the Constitution is written on pieces of paper; and the Deferred Action against Childhood Arrivals program, from which she hopes to benefit, also is written on pieces of paper.

The “next 7 year old who comes to this great country with wonder in her eyes,” as she writes, will be able to do so totally without fear if she does it legally. Or is the willingness to recognize and abide by the laws of this great country something her parents should teach her to ignore in pursuit of her dream of citizenship?
