Letter to the editor:

Big government can’t be trusted

I’m against a big federal government because of human nature. When human beings are given great power, they often abuse it and lose their connection with the rest of us.

A commissioner with the IRS, Faris Fink, is a perfect example. He approved and participated in spending on conferences and a Star Trek video that clearly was inappropriate in 2010, because he lost connection with the rest of us.

He is protected by civil service rules, so the worst that probably happens to him is that he retires with full benefits.

Congress will make a show of Fink in hearings but will not amend the civil service rules so the next person who does something like this could be punished appropriately.

Human nature doesn’t change, so I’d like to see a smaller federal government.

If we can’t get that, it would be nice if Congress amended civil service rules so that when government employees abuse the public trust, they would be punished in a way that might deter others
