las vegas 51s:

Another strong day at the plate helps 51s take three of four from Salt Lake

The Las Vegas 51s used a five-run fifth inning Monday in a 9-7 victory against the visiting Salt Lake Bees to take three games of the four-game series.

Francisco Pena belted a two-run home run for the 51s to cap the fifth-inning outburst, which also included a RBI double from Eric Campbell and run-scoring singles from Jamie Hoffmann and Omar Quintanilla.

One day after exploding for 16 hits and 13 runs in a victory against Salt Lake, the Las Vegas bats continued to sizzle with a 15-hit attack, and just one 51s batter failed to record a hit.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered for the second straight day for Las Vegas, Pena went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Quintanilla was 3-for-4 with two runs.

Zack Wheeler, the top pitching prospect in the New York Mets system who was making one of his last starts with Las Vegas, surrendered a pair of home runs in four innings. He was credited with a no-decision.

The 51s open a series Tuesday against the Reno Aces at Cashman Field.
