letter to the editor:

Gun violence in U.S., elsewhere

In reference to the Nov. 2 letter to the editor, “Want less violence? Arm everyone,” I have a few facts that seem to imply the contrary.

In 2010, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Korea, Japan and all 17 countries in the eurozone (about 305 million people) combined to account for fewer than 1,300 homicides by firearm. Each of those countries has either removed or severely restricted the possession of handguns.

On the other hand, America has about the same population, but during that same year, 11,078 Americans were victims of homicide with firearms. An astounding 73,505 Americans were intentionally shot and survived.

Finally, accidental shootings in 2010 accounted for the deaths of an additional 606 Americans.
