Andrew Doughman’s Tuesday article “Sandoval puts GOP in bind on health care” is accurate but needs a little clarification in light of comments from Chuck Muth about Gov. Sandoval being a political opportunist. Sandoval represents all Nevadans, not just Republicans, and decisions he makes are based on that premise. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is the law. The actions the governor took are rooted in the 10th Amendment. It was Nevada’s choice, as a sovereign state, to accept or reject this federal law.
Those of us who take it upon ourselves to monitor the state Legislature saw the laws establishing the State Insurance Exchange and adding people to the Medicaid rolls pass in 2011 and 2013. We reported that to our email lists faithfully so that anyone who opposed or approved of the changes could respond to their legislators. Muth’s comment about the legislation that passed authorizing the exchange and Medicaid changes flying “under the radar” is hogwash.
I applaud the governor for representing all Nevadans, not just his political party. I also applaud our legislators for representing all their constituents.
