letter to the editor:

Greed gets in the way of tradition

When I was growing up in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, holidays and Sundays were celebrated as sacred. Department and grocery stores were closed on Sundays and Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. It was a special family day to celebrate and remember why we were celebrating.

When did the tradition change?

Now, stores are open all day and evening and the evenings previous to the holidays. People are more interested in getting a “deal” on the holidays than celebrating the day with family. It breaks my heart to hear that the stores expect to be overflowing with sales while we are ignoring the meaning of the holiday. Are we going to forget the meaning of Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc., by running to the department stores instead of spending the holidays with families? What is happening to this world when tradition is forgotten over greed?
