Letter to the editor:

Debt is rising but deficits decreasing

I’d like to comment on the letter from Reuel Williams, “In fact, the budget deficit is growing,” in the Sept. 1 Las Vegas Sun. Paul Krugman’s earlier column on the public’s perception of the deficit was absolutely correct, as were his comments on budget deficits.

Budget deficits change monthly and have come down since January 2010. The Congressional Budget Office has forecast that the budget deficit for the budget year ending Sept. 30 will be $670 billion, which is down drastically from previous years.

These numbers are available in CBO reports. I suspect Williams has confused budget deficits with the national debt. The national debt has increased and will continue to increase until more revenue is added to the treasury.
