letters to the editor:

Perhaps boycott will persuade businesses to take anti-guns stance

The National Rifle Association and its Republicans are just too power-hungry and greedy.

Logical gun-control legislation does not trample on their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Conservatives have been effectively blocking nearly all proposed gun-control legislation efforts. In lieu of legislation, gun-control advocates need to take immediate actions against the entire conservative element in America.

Reasonable and life-valuing people understand comprehensive background checks and red-flag data systems that disqualify those with criminal and/or violent pasts are an excellent tool.

Legislation implementing these two systems would increase our safety. This is in fact a right of all Americans; the Declaration of Independence specifically guarantees its citizens the preservation of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

So in my own relatively small counterstroke against the National Rifle Association and Republicans, I have decided to work in the interests of prohibiting gun owners from carrying their weapons into places of business.

I will buy an array of signs that signify an allegiance to, and a participation in, “gun-free zones.” And in every place of business that I frequent, I shall request permission to post in a highly visible area “gun-free zone” signs. I will boycott businesses that refuse to participate.

Here is the bottom line: Because the NRA and its Republican politicians continue to not allow reasonable control over who owns guns, our only alternative is to restrict the venues where anyone may legally carry their weapons.

Please, do your small part.
