Letter to the editor:

Officials worked hard for Nevadans

On Dec. 28, President Barack Obama designated the Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and Congresswoman Dina Titus, the people of Nevada are celebrating the protection of the state’s piece of the Grand Canyon.

With the announcement, Obama also continues to cement his conservation legacy by permanently protecting more land and water than any president in history.

The Gold Butte region is home to a pristine desert landscape with rugged mountains and canyons, Joshua trees, prehistoric fossils, majestic wildlife and an abundant Native American history that dates back more than 3,000 years.

As a Nevadan, I am thrilled Obama permanently designated these majestic landscapes and cultural treasures for current and future generations to enjoy.

I thank President Obama, Sen. Reid and Congresswoman Titus for their hard work making this national monument a reality and remembering that home means Nevada.
